What to Do When Preparing to Install a New Heating System

May 2, 2023 by Social Sphere Media

Installing a new heating system is a significant investment that can provide long-term benefits, including energy savings and improved indoor comfort. However, the installation process can be daunting, especially for homeowners unfamiliar with the technical aspects of heating systems. This article provides a comprehensive guide to preparing for a new heating system installation.

Selecting the Right System

The first step in preparing for a new heating system installation is selecting the right system. Choosing a system suitable for the home’s size, heating requirements, and budget is essential. Some of the most common types of heating systems include furnaces, boilers, and heat pumps. Each system has unique features and advantages, and it is crucial to compare them carefully before deciding.

When selecting a heating system, it is also essential to consider the fuel source. The most cost-effective option may vary depending on the location and availability of natural gas, propane, or electricity. Additionally, homeowners should consider the system’s energy efficiency rating, as higher-rated systems generally provide greater savings over time.

Working with a Professional Installer

Once a heating system has been selected, it is time to find a professional installer. Choosing the right installer is as important as selecting the right system, as the installation process plays a critical role in the system’s performance and longevity. Homeowners should look for licensed, insured, and experienced installers to install the type of system selected.

Homeowners should ask for references and check online reviews to ensure the installer has a good reputation. The installer should also provide a detailed written estimate, including the cost of materials, labor, and additional services, such as removing the old system or upgrading the ductwork.

Preparing for the Installation

Once the heating system and installer have been selected, it is time to prepare for the installation process. The following are some essential steps to take before the installation date:

  1. Clear the Area: The installation crew will need ample space to work, so it is essential to clear any obstacles from the area around the heating system. This includes removing furniture, rugs, and other items that may be in the way. Additionally, the crew will need access to the electrical panel, which should be easily accessible.
  2. Protect Flooring: The installation process can be messy, and it is essential to protect flooring from scratches, dents, and other damage. Homeowners should cover the floors around the heating system with drop cloths or other protective materials.
  3. Make Accommodations: The installation process can take several hours or even days, depending on the type of system and the complexity of the installation. Homeowners should make accommodations for their families, including arranging for alternative heating sources and preparing meals ahead of time.
  4. Secure Pets: Pets can be curious and interfere with installation. Homeowners should secure pets in a separate area of the home or arrange for a pet sitter during the installation process.
  5. Communicate with the Installer: The installer should be informed of any special considerations, such as allergies or health conditions, before the installation begins. Additionally, homeowners should ask the installer about specific instructions or requirements for the installation process.

Final Thoughts

Installing a new heating system can be a significant investment, but it can also provide long-term benefits in terms of energy savings and indoor comfort. To ensure a successful installation process, it is essential to be mindful of everything that needs to be done beforehand. We hope these tips will help you prepare for their upcoming heating system installation and make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible.

My experience with Paul's Heating & Air for the past year has been excellent. They are text book when it comes to customer service. They are professionals through & through. Their technicians are highly knowledgeable & skilled & incredibly thorough. They're fastidious in making sure they do it right the first time and making it right if they're not perfect which is rare for them not to be perfect. They take pride in their work. They want to do a great job and that positive, constructive, productive attitude shows. We recently had to replace an aging AC/Furnace unit (17 years old) and the installation of the new Carrier Performance Series was flawless and efficient. The technicians were focused & diligent making sure to dot every technical "i" and cross every technical "t." Also, even though Carrier can be a bit more expensive than some of the budget brands such as Goodman, Carrier and Paul's Heating & Air stand behind their product and their service. It's all about the installation & maintenance, so, with Paul's Heating & Air you not only get an excellent product in Carrier but you also get consummate professionals who know how to install the equipment properly & maintain it properly so you can get the most out of it for many, many years. If it isn't already obvious, I can't recommend Paul's Heating & Air enough. It's money well-spent — a great value for your hard-earned dollar.
