5 Things People Should Do to Air Conditioners Before Summer

March 17, 2023 by Social Sphere Media

Summer is right around the corner. Therefore, homeowners must ensure their air conditioning units function at best, battling the dreaded summer heat. Although it is an excellent time to enjoy the sunshine outdoors, the heat can become unbearable.

Maintaining an air conditioning unit should prolong its life span while ensuring homeowners it can last throughout summer—even with excessive use and around-the-clock operations. But what should people do to air conditioners before summer comes?

1. Clean Filters

One of the most important steps is to clean the air filters. A dirty filter can reduce the cooling system’s efficiency and cause it to strain, using more energy to operate. Remove the filter from the unit and use a vacuum cleaner or a brush to clean off the dirt and dust.

When your air filters become clogged with dirt and debris, they can restrict the airflow through your air conditioner and cause it to work harder than necessary. As a result, your air conditioner will use more energy and cost you more money in electricity bills.

2. Clean Condenser Coils

The condenser coils release heat from the refrigerant inside the air conditioner. When these coils become dirty, they cannot release heat effectively. Therefore, the air conditioner has to work harder and use more energy to keep your home cool.

The condenser coils are made of copper or aluminum. They are usually located outside the house, filled with a particular type of refrigerant that can absorb heat from the air in your home and transfer it to the outside air. It is then passed back into the air conditioner, which is cooled and reused.

3. Clear Debris From Unit

Over time, debris, such as leaves, twigs, and dirt, can accumulate outside the air conditioner. The debris can block the airflow, making the unit work harder and use more energy. Removing the debris can keep the air conditioner running efficiently.

Start by turning off the power to the air conditioner. Then, use a garden hose to spray the outside unit, removing any debris that has built up. Finally, use a brush to sweep away any remaining debris. However, ensure the unit is dry before using it again to avoid water damage.

4. Program the Thermostat

Programming the thermostat can help save energy and money. Set the thermostat to the optimal temperature when you’re home and a higher temperature when you’re away. Homeowners can also use the “sleep” setting to lower the temperature during the night.

As a result, programming the thermostat as needed will help save energy and money on your energy bills. It also helps to set the timer in using the air conditioning unit, running only within an intended time. Therefore, energy costs should not become too high.

5. Schedule Regular Maintenance

Scheduling regular maintenance for your HVAC system is a critical way to save energy and money. Regular maintenance helps to identify minor problems and potential issues before they become expensive repairs. It also helps to keep the system running more efficiently.

Regular maintenance should include cleaning the indoor and outdoor units, replacing filters, checking for leaks, checking the wiring, and inspecting the system for any other issues. If any problems are identified, they should be addressed as soon as possible to prevent damage.

Conclusion

Air conditioning units are a great way to beat the heat and make summer memorable. Air conditioners can help keep you cool and comfortable, no matter how hot it gets outside.

My experience with Paul's Heating & Air for the past year has been excellent. They are text book when it comes to customer service. They are professionals through & through. Their technicians are highly knowledgeable & skilled & incredibly thorough. They're fastidious in making sure they do it right the first time and making it right if they're not perfect which is rare for them not to be perfect. They take pride in their work. They want to do a great job and that positive, constructive, productive attitude shows. We recently had to replace an aging AC/Furnace unit (17 years old) and the installation of the new Carrier Performance Series was flawless and efficient. The technicians were focused & diligent making sure to dot every technical "i" and cross every technical "t." Also, even though Carrier can be a bit more expensive than some of the budget brands such as Goodman, Carrier and Paul's Heating & Air stand behind their product and their service. It's all about the installation & maintenance, so, with Paul's Heating & Air you not only get an excellent product in Carrier but you also get consummate professionals who know how to install the equipment properly & maintain it properly so you can get the most out of it for many, many years. If it isn't already obvious, I can't recommend Paul's Heating & Air enough. It's money well-spent — a great value for your hard-earned dollar.
