AC Maintenance in Summer and How to Prepare for the Winter

August 19, 2022 by Social Sphere Media

Summer is when more people will turn to their air conditioners the most to keep cool. However, before doing so, it’s essential to ensure that your air conditioner is in good working order. Otherwise, you could be in for a nasty surprise when the temperature starts to rise.

Parts of AC Unit to Keep an Eye on

1. Filters

The filter’s primary purpose is to remove contaminants from the air circulated through the unit. Over time, the filter can become clogged with dirt, dust, and other allergens, reducing the unit’s efficiency and causing it to work harder than necessary. In some cases, a dirty filter can also lead to health problems, as it can circulate harmful bacteria and pollutants throughout your home.

The frequency with which you need to change the filter will depend on the type of unit you have and the environment in which you use it. For example, if you live in an area with a lot of dust or pollen, you may need to change the filter more often. Similarly, their hair and dander can quickly clog the filter if you have pets.

In general, it’s a good idea to check the filter every month and change it if it looks dirty. Some AC units have filters that can be cleaned and reused, while others need to be replaced. Be sure to consult your owner’s manual to determine your filter type and how often it needs to be changed.

2. Coils

Coils are essential to an air conditioner and must be kept clean to work correctly. If your coils are dirty, your air conditioner will have to work harder to cool your home, leading to higher energy bills.

You can do a few simple things to keep your coils clean and prevent them from getting too dirty. First, make sure that you regularly change your air filter. A clean air filter will help to prevent dirt and dust from getting into your coils.

Second, if you have a split system air conditioner, you should have the indoor and outdoor coils cleaned by a professional every few years. That will help remove any build-up of dirt and dust over time.

Finally, if you notice that your coils are dirty, you can clean them yourself using a soft brush and a mild detergent. Be sure to turn off your air conditioner before you start cleaning the coils. If you want to avoid complications, however, you may call professionals to handle your AC maintenance.

How to Prepare Your AC Unit for the Winter

As the weather begins to cool down in the latter parts of August, it’s essential to start thinking about how to prepare your AC unit for the winter. A few simple steps can help ensure that your AC unit will be ready to go when the warmer weather returns.

  1. Schedule a Tune-up: Just like your car, your AC unit needs regular maintenance to run its best. Schedule a tune-up with a qualified technician before the start of the cooling season. It will help ensure that your unit is clean and operating efficiently.
  2. Change Your Air Filter: A clean air filter is essential for efficient AC operation. Check your filter monthly and change it as needed.
  3. Keep the Area Around Your AC Unit Clear: Debris can block airflow and cause your unit to work harder than it needs to. Make sure there’s at least two feet of clearance around your unit, and trim back any foliage that’s too close.
  4. Cover Your AC Unit: While most units are designed to withstand the elements, it’s still a good idea to cover your unit when it’s not in use. That will help protect it from dirt, debris, and the elements.

These simple steps can help ensure that your AC unit is ready when warmer weather returns.

Conclusion

It’s crucial to maintain your air conditioner to keep it running correctly. Regularly cleaning the unit and changing the filter can extend its lifespan and ensure that it continues to provide efficient cooling for your home. In addition, regular maintenance can help prevent expensive repairs in the future.

My experience with Paul's Heating & Air for the past year has been excellent. They are text book when it comes to customer service. They are professionals through & through. Their technicians are highly knowledgeable & skilled & incredibly thorough. They're fastidious in making sure they do it right the first time and making it right if they're not perfect which is rare for them not to be perfect. They take pride in their work. They want to do a great job and that positive, constructive, productive attitude shows. We recently had to replace an aging AC/Furnace unit (17 years old) and the installation of the new Carrier Performance Series was flawless and efficient. The technicians were focused & diligent making sure to dot every technical "i" and cross every technical "t." Also, even though Carrier can be a bit more expensive than some of the budget brands such as Goodman, Carrier and Paul's Heating & Air stand behind their product and their service. It's all about the installation & maintenance, so, with Paul's Heating & Air you not only get an excellent product in Carrier but you also get consummate professionals who know how to install the equipment properly & maintain it properly so you can get the most out of it for many, many years. If it isn't already obvious, I can't recommend Paul's Heating & Air enough. It's money well-spent — a great value for your hard-earned dollar.
